Program Length and Number of Positions

This is a 24-month program beginning July 1 of each year. Four new positions are offered each year.

Description

This Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program is offered jointly by the University of Pennsylvania Dental Medicine and The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). The residency program is 24 months in length and is strongly clinical in orientation. The clinical portion of the program is conducted at CHOP and the University of Pennsylvania Dental Medicine. CHOP is a 512-bed tertiary care teaching and research hospital with and extremely large patient population. The hospital and its medical staff have been widely recognized as extraordinary and one of the finest in the United States. 

The primary philosophy of care in the program is the care of the whole child. Residents will receive extensive clinical and didactic training in pediatric dentistry, including: comprehensive care of both healthy and special needs children and adolescents, restorative dentistry, pulp therapy, periodontal therapy, pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic behavior management techniques, space maintenance, orthodontic therapy, growth and development, treatment of patients under sedation, treatment of patients in the operating room under general anesthesia, and management of traumatic injuries and emergency care. Hospital rotations include anesthesia, pediatric medicine, emergency room, craniofacial/cleft lip and palate clinic, sedation and hematology/oncology clinics, OMFS, spina bifida, community outreach (HHI), and practice management. These rotations will help residents gain a deeper understanding of medical conditions as they work closely with medical colleagues and other members of the health care team. 

Residents will have time designated for research and involvement in community activity. They will have teaching experiences at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine Pediatric Dentistry Clinic. A research project or report is required of each resident. The program encourages development of critical thinking and inquiry. 

Clinical and didactic training in this residency meets the advanced education eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry examination.

Curriculum

The didactic curriculum - including seminars, case reviews, journal club and grand rounds - complements and supports the clinical curriculum and training. Correlation between the basic medical and dental sciences and clinical care is a focus. The University of Pennsylvania’s Division of Graduate Dental Education offers many of the basic science courses, which are required for ADA accreditation. This DADE portion of the curriculum includes clinical microbiology, oral biochemistry, pharmacology, head and neck anatomy, biostatistics and clinical epidemiology, and research methodology.

Program Stipend and Tuition

There is an annual tuition of approximately $33,500 for the pediatric dentistry program; residents receive an annual stipend and bonus from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia of approximately $88,000 and medical benefits. Benefits include: medical, dental and vision insurance, malpractice coverage and subsidized transportation funding. There is support for travel to meetings.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must fulfill the following requirements to be considered for admission:

• Patricipation in National Matching Services
• D.M.D. or D.D.S. from and ADA-accredited U.S. or Canadian dental school
• PASS application
• U.S. citizenship at time of application
• Eligibility for training license in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania
